A few days shy of the 2nd anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, a group of volunteers assembled in a Far Rockaway community center. They sipped coffee and made small talk while awaiting their marching orders for the day.
“So, what brings you down to the Rockaways?”
“My company gives days off for volunteering.”
They turned to another volunteer wearing a gray, Team Rubicon t-shirt. His reply, “I just wanted to help.”
Also just wanting to help were nearly a dozen of his fellow TR volunteers — most of whom were military veterans or first responders.
